Cross Country Practice
The aim of this guide is to provide some physical activities for your children, to
disperse throughout the day/week. Classes 4-7 will be participating in the school
cross country at some point soon, so I thought that some activities that work
towards that would be ideal. The date for the cross country will be decided after
we find out what is happening re: lockdown this week. I will let you know when it
has been sorted.
Another thing that we need to think about is Weekly Winter Sports, which are to
begin this term (situation depending). If you could discuss with your child which of
the following sports they would like to play, and let me know, that would be
amazing.
The offered sports will be: Football; Netball; Hockey; Rugby (Rip or Tackle).
Send me a quick email with their preference to: ashleym@ch.steiner.school.nz.
As far as when and how to do the activities below, there is no stress or rush to do
them. However works best for your whānau is up to you. My thinking is that some
of them would be great to do together, to break up the day and let off a bit of
steam. Maybe putting on some up-tempo music and having a bit of fun!
Warm-ups
• Star jumps; Jogging on the spot; Lunges; Squats; Arm Swings. These are just
to get muscles warmed up and keep them from getting injured. You could
also just have a bit of a dance, anything to get your body moving that isn’t
too strenuous.
Stretches
• I did a range of stretches with classes 5-7 last term, if your child is in one of
those classes see what they can remember. These don’t need to be elite level. Just get them to identify where their muscles are and try to stretch
them out.
Jogging
• Here we need to potentially leave the house, and practice safe social
distancing and road awareness. It may be that leaving your property isn’t
ideal, if so then it is fine to set up a course around your yard. For those of
you that like to run, or don’t mind it, it would be great to go out for a jog
with your child. Just around the block, and at a nice steady pace.
Running and Sprinting
• If your child has a need for speed, maybe you could time them running and
sprinting a distance that you decide on. For advanced runners it could be
further, and they may want to run around the block as fast as they can. If
you think that is a good idea and they will be safe, then let them see how
fast they can go! Keep a track of times and see if they can beat them.
If there are any other activities that you’d like to do, or games that work well
for your children, give them a go. Physical activity is important to keep us
feeling good, even and especially with the limitations we have today.
If your child doesn’t feel up to running around the block, or is disinterested,
don’t hesitate to change it up. I would recommend that they engage in some
sort of physical activity though, at some point during the day.
Let me know of any fun ideas for activities you have, so I can try to tailor these
guides to suit. I’m always open to new ideas!
Have fun and stay safe,
Ashley McCormack
