Friday, already?

Mลrena koutou

Kei te pฤ“hea koe? This morning we would usually have kapa haka, do a wee warm up, show your whฤnau your favourite warm up that we do. Is it the macarena? Crusaders vowel sounds? Kei runga? A haka mana (my personal favourite)? Pusi nofo (actually maybe this is my favourite, maybe I just love them all)? Could you teach it to someone else in your bubble?

Today you have spelling, daily math and reading, your subject lessons are math, writing and library.

Spelling:
Today is Friday and on Fridays we test our words, it has been a short week with less practice so don't feel bad if you get a few wrong. Get somebody in your bubble to test you, any that you find tricky add to next week's words to get a bit more practice.

Daily math:
Congratulations to yesterday's first 5, Hans, Ella, Blake, Niamh and Ciaran who each got a donut!

These daily math questions are tricky, I love how many of you are giving it a go, it doesn't matter if you are wrong, I can help explain them via email if you need me to, I'm trying to be with my laptop between 8:40 and 10:30 to answer math questions, Ash even brings me coffee! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Also, I was very impressed that some people revisited their questions from Wednesday and got them correct, well done.

Today's questions:

1. Enough children: What is the least number of children someone could have so that every child would have at least two brothers and two sisters?

2. Counting racers
A) The organiser of a race notices that if she divides the total number of racers into groups of 4, there are two left over, and if she divides them into groups of 3 there is one left over. How many racers are there? (There is more than one possible answer).

B) The organiser of a race notices that if she divides the total number of racers into groups of 4, there are 3 left over, and if she divides them into groups of 5, there are three left over. How many racers are there? (There is more than one possible answer).

Reading:
Keep working on your reading log

Math:
*remember you don't need to do this for the daily math prize

(note for parents)
The purpose of this task is to help your child to:
• name and describe everyday shapes and objects, using their own language and the language of geometry
• notice the number of faces, edges and corners on solid shapes (polyhedra)
• name the flat faces on solid shapes. These are two-dimensional (plane) shapes such as a squares, circles, rectangles, triangles
• find, draw and name polyhedra they see around them Discuss this page with your child and encourage them to look for, draw and name other solid shapes around your home. Encourage them to describe these shapes.

Writing:

Cinquain 5 line poem
We did these in class last year about writing with our ink and feather pens. Some people found it a wee bit tricky to get the right number of syllables in each line, have a go. I'd like you to write about living in a bubble, or autumn, or something else that is relevant for you at the moment.

line 1:2 syllables title, (noun - naming word)
line 2: 4 syllables (adjectives that describe the title)
line 3: 6 syllables (three verbs- doing words ending with –ing)
line 4:8 syllables (4 words that express feeling or describe more)
line 5: 2 syllables (synonym - another word with a similar meaning to title).

Here's my poem...

Autumn

Golden, chilly

Falling, swirling, tumbling

Crunchy, joyous, playful, laughter

Harvest

How lovely would it be to publish a good copy of your poem and gift it to somebody?

Library:

While we can't physically go to the library and choose new books we are a bit limited as to what we do for library time, I thought you might like to hear me read you a story?

Click play on the video below if you'd like to see me read a story. Today's story is A Mad Tea-Party, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. You can hear my chickens clucking away in the background. I also have an audio recording available if that is preferred, please email me and I'll send it to you.

This is one of my chickens, either Henny or Penny, I can't tell the difference anymore, so I just call them both HennyPenny

Look at the beautiful form drawing people did yesterday! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Lastly, I'll leave you all with a stop motion video that Phoebe made, it's amazing, I can tell a lot of work went into it, well done Phoebe!

Have a great weekend whฤnau!
See you Monday ๐Ÿ’—

Our first Thursday in the treehouse

Ata mฤrie Class 5

Thank you all so much for your emails yesterday, each one filled up my cup with happiness and spread a giant smile on my face. Isn't it amazing that we can keep in touch despite not being able to be together. I know it is not quite the same, but hopefully it helps a little. I saw Ella-rose today while I was out for my walk, so lovely to see your smiling face Ella, it made my day!

Today we did some cutting and painting as a family, even our cat Miss Honey wanted to get involved and got paint all over her paws. I had to put her outside so she didn't get paint on the carpet, funny cat. You might be able to see a wee bit of paint on her head and paw in this photo.

A reminder to please email me at staceym@ch.steiner.school.nz  as the class email system has to go through Sabine before it gets to me. Easier to do it directly to my school email so we save her a job. Thank you ๐Ÿ’—

As usual, for today you will have daily spelling, math and reading, your subject lessons today are math, form drawing and sport.

Spelling:
Today's spelling challenge is to put each word in to a sentence (see yesterday's post for the words).

Yesterday I asked you to record the words somewhere and to be as creative as you like. I really enjoyed this photo sent to me by Dylan, how many places can you see words written? Amazing work Dylan!

Daily Maths:
Each day I will be giving prizes to the first 5 correct answers for the questions, make sure you answer all of them to be in to win and check back to see if you were correct. If you were incorrect initially you still get a chance to revisit the questions and change your answers. Today's prizes were chocolate fish (vegan ones also available). Congratulations to Ari, William, Phoebe, Ciaran and Blake for getting chocolate fish. Special mention also to Briar who was a very close sixth (missed out by about 3 minutes) and Sian who also sent in answers and was correct. Daily posts are available at 8:40am when school starts so get in early if you want a prize. I think some of you will be very excited about today's treat, especially Annie ๐Ÿ˜„

Today's math:

1. A baseball and a bat: Kate bought a baseball and a bat for $110. How much did the bat cost if the bat cost $100 more than the baseball?

2. Five odd numbers: Find five consecutive odd numbers that add to 155.

Reading:
Work on your reading log (described in yesterday's post).

Math:
*disclaimer, you do not have to do this part for the daily math prize, only the two questions above.

Remember we learned about polygons in our last main lesson at school? Polygons are shapes that have at least 3 sides and angles.
This asks you about simple and complex polygons, simple polygons' lines do not intersect each other (remember intersecting lines are like an intersection in a road). Complex ones do... here's a picture I found that may help explain it better...

Classes of Polygons Planar polygons Non-planar polygons Simple ...The Fake Geek's blog: Simple polygon

Form drawing:
Today's form is different to what we had been doing in class but easier to explain without watching me do it. Start with the circle, then the shapes on the inside, lastly the shapes outside the circle. Notice how you could do all the steps after the initial circle with one loopy line? Try tracing it in the air or on the paper with your finger being using a pencil. Also, remember to press softly when you begin, you can go over darker afterwards with your colours. You can do this with your pencils on paper, or with chalk on your footpath if you've got some, get creative, I'd love to see where you put these around your home.

Sport:
Sport today is your own free choice. If we were at school we would have cross country coming up in a couple of weeks so you could practice your running (safely in your bubble around your neighborhood of course). Another option is to plan and do a workout, see if you can get someone else in your bubble to do your workout, send it to me and I can do it to, I'd love a challenge. Something else you could do is play or make up a game, depending on how many people are in your bubble and free to join you, this could be tricky. A girl about your age in my neighborhood had made a giant snakes and ladders with chalk, it's very cool, Instead of having pieces you use your body to move up and down. I took a photo of it for you today. Maybe you could make one at home?

p.s Jordi, the cricket snakes and ladders your mum and sister made is very cool! For anyone not on whatsapp, here it is. Ash is a bit jealous, he loves cricket.

Lastly, I was so impressed with the writing that I saw yesterday. Feel free to take a photo of what you wrote and send it to me, otherwise bring it with you when we get back to school and I can see it then. Keep up the good work, show me what you are doing or even just write a message to touch base and say hi, either way I always love hearing from you.

Wednesday that feels like Monday, our first day of school in the treehouse

Welcome to our first day of school in the treehouse, I'm so glad you could join me! I'm writing these posts the night before after the kids are asleep and the daily chores have been done. My fingers are currently all pruney from doing the dishes, have you had that before, maybe from spending too long in the bath?

Our days will be based off what we would usually do at school but changed slightly to suit your home situation. Every day there will be spelling, daily math and reading, there will also be three other subject lessons. Wednesdays are orchestra, writing and handwork, what a great day to start!

Spelling:
Your words for the week come from the essential word spelling list #5, you may remember these lists from the end of last year when I tested you up to list 4?
Your task for today is to record the words and display them somewhere in your house, be as creative as you like with this.

Daily math:
Each day I will give you two word problems, work them out and email me with the answer, there may be prizes for the first to respond ๐Ÿ˜„

      1. Pet’s legs: All of Jane’s pets are either cats or birds. How many cats and birds does Jane have...
      A) if she has 3 pets and they have a total of 10 legs.
      B) if she has 10 pets and they have a total of 32 legs.

2. In the middle: John is both the 10th tallest and the 10th shortest in his class. How many students are in his class?
mixed species, cat and bird 6 | Animals | Animals, Cats, Cute cats

Reading:
Silent read and fill out your reading log, if you haven't already started this you'll need a book or piece of paper you can keep safe. Record the book title, genre, number of minutes spent reading and parent initials.

Once you have finished a book you can do a mini book report. Record the title, author, genre, number of pages and a ๐ŸŒŸ rating out of 5. 5 stars ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ is "amazing, I would recommend that to a friend", 1 star ๐ŸŒŸ is I wish I'd never read that.

Orchestra:
Practice your violin or cello.

Writing:
Three times a week you will get a writing task. Try to finish the story the same day.

Make sure to edit your work, check for words you aren’t sure of, is there anything you could change to make it more interesting, have you got full stops and capitals in the correct places? Using a different colour pen is good so we can see your editing.

Your task today is imagine that the year is 2080, your grandchild is visiting you. Write what you'd tell them about the time when covid-19 hit the world and we all went into lock down.

Handwork:

Embroidery Project for Handwork
Making a Class Kahu huruhuru (feather cloak)

Kia ora Class 5 families,

I hope you are all happy and well, and enjoying this opportunity for some special time together. You are all in my thoughts and I miss seeing you and enjoying the wonderful handwork that you do.
Some of you may have noticed the feather cloak hanging in the Handwork Room. This was made by Maddy’s students when in Class 5. The project was planned for Term 4 but Stacey and I feel that now, with all the time you have together as family, it is the perfect opportunity for you to make a start on this. It will help keep your fingers nimble and those creative juices flowing, while also giving you the chance to get to know more about your family history and special connections you may have to the land.
Today's job is to Interview your family to get some ideas (Sit with your family and have a korero about what is important to you all, share something of your history (you may hear some new stories) and what connects you all as a family. Ask everyone to think about what things in the natural world (particularly from the area you live in) are special to them and explore your family has connections to these.)

Remember that you have less than two hours of Handwork each week and so the amount of work you do at home should reflect this. Do as little or as much as you wish. If it is something you enjoy and it makes you feel good then by all means do as much as you like.

Take care and make the most of this time.

Arohanui
Janice

I'm so excited to see what you get up to today, please email me staceym@ch.steiner.school.nz with what you have done. I'd also love to see anything you do that isn't in today's learning, remember it's okay to be doing other stuff, baking, crafting, painting, exercise, household jobs, gardening and experiments are all very great things to be doing at the moment. The single most important thing that you should be doing is whatever works best for your family!

Arohanui, I miss you all so much!

Stacey
